5 Weed Control Tips to Keep Your Lawn Healthy

Weeding your garden can be time-consuming and frustrating. While weed control may seem like a necessary evil, there is no need to spend hours pulling out unwanted plants when you can prevent them in the first place. There are different ways to control weeds on your lawn. Follow the tips below to have a healthy and weed-free lawn.

1. Mulch

It’s tempting to leave bare patches of soil where weeds grow, but this can lead to new weeds popping up. Instead, try covering your empty areas with mulch. Mulch acts as a barrier between the soil and air temperatures, helping to protect the soil from heat buildup.

It also keeps moisture levels high around roots. The result? A cooler, healthier environment for your plants. Whether you’re growing vegetables, ornamental grasses, or flowering plants, a thick layer of organic material will help keep weeds at bay.

2. Start weed control early

The earlier you start weed control, the less likely you will encounter problems later. It means that once you see young seedlings poking through the ground, you should immediately pull out any unwelcome intruders. If you wait until after the weeds have grown into large, mature plants, you may find yourself dealing with a more complex problem.

You may also want to inspect your garden for any weed seeds as early as possible. These tiny seeds can germinate quickly, so if you don’t remove them as soon as they appear, you could end up having an entire patch of weeds before you even realize what’s going on.

3. Water deeply

If you water your lawn too often, you’ll end up encouraging shallow root development. It makes it easier for weeds to get a foothold in your yard, and they will eventually overtake your beautiful grass. By watering deeply and infrequently, you’ll encourage healthy, deep roots that can withstand droughts and other extreme conditions. In addition, remember to deprive the weeds of water. It will cause their leaves to wilt and fall off, making them easier to spot and remove.

4. Mow high

When you mow higher, you’re cutting down on the amount of light reaching the soil. It helps prevent weeds from getting started by shading out the sun. You can do this by simply raising your mower blade to its highest setting. It is easy to keep weeds at bay without spending long days weeding your lawn.

5. Use the right tools

Lastly, weed control requires proper tools. For example, you need a sturdy pair of gloves to handle tough perennials while avoiding damage to your hands. Make sure that you use the correct type of tool for each job. Some tools are better suited for certain types of weeds. Some people prefer using a shovel to dig up weeds, while others prefer a trowel. You might even consider investing in a rototiller, ideal for removing stubborn weeds.
